Tutors
The M&O Literacy Council wouldn’t be a success without the community volunteers who generously share their time and talent. The need for tutors is constant, and the rewards are many.
M&O Literacy Council Tutor Training
M&O Literacy Council provides complimentary tutor training sessions. No previous teaching experience is required, just a willingness and the time to volunteer approximately one hour a week. Adults who are patient and enjoy serving others are encouraged to apply for tutor training.
Typical Tutoring Session
Tutors meet one-on-one with students several times a month at a local church, technical college, municipal building, or library. M&O Literacy Council provides the curriculum and educational resources tailored to meet the student’s goals. Tutoring sessions typically include a review, new lesson, and opportunities for conversation. The adult mentor and English language learner get to know one another and form a bond that extends beyond the classroom. Together, they celebrate milestones and achievements as they work to achieve individual goals.
Matching A Tutor with an Adult Learner
To successfully match a tutor with an English language learner, M&O Literacy Council considers many different factors. These factors include a student’s goals, a tutor’s skills and training, and the communities in which they live. Through a comprehensive intake and training process, M&O Literacy Council effectively pair tutors and ELL students. Tutoring sessions take place throughout Marinette and Oconto counties, often at a library, church, technical college, or municipal building.
