Our Story

M&O Literacy Council started in 2012, not in a classroom but in a hospital room. Janet Glime was working as a nurse when she discovered that the inability to read was making life difficult for patients. Janet’s compassionate response grew into a community organization dedicated to literacy education. One particular patient’s story was especially moving. The patient told Janet, “Before I die, I want to learn to read.” He died shortly after, and his eagerness to read motivated Janet to start the M&O Literacy Council. She realized how difficult and intimidating it could be to complete daily tasks without having the necessary literacy skills.

Literacy Advocates Develop a Literacy Council

To address the need for literacy education, Janet Glime and a group of literacy advocates started the M&O Literacy Council. The Council serves English language learners in Marinette County and Oconto County, Wisconsin, who want to improve their reading, writing, comprehension, English speaking, math, or other skills. The M&O Literacy Council invites volunteers from all walks of life to become tutors. Complimentary tutor training is provided once a year.

Volunteer-Led Nonprofit Literacy Organization

Janet Glime continues to lead the volunteer-led, nonprofit literacy council she helped to launch. She serves as the M&O Literacy Council president and the council’s volunteer administrator.

“The term ‘literacy’ has expanded to mean so much more than just learning to read, write and do math. We now see it can lift people out of poverty, enrich a person’s life, help maintain employment, and, while helping to follow instructions, it can improve one’s quality of life.”

Serving Marinette & Oconto Counties in Wisconsin

M&O Literacy Council matches volunteer tutors with ELL students in their communities. Together, the tutors and students work toward achieving the students’ specific goals. The volunteer-led nonprofit organization helps adult learners learn English, get a GED credential, study for a U.S. Citizenship or driver’s license test, or gain other skills.
